Composite or Wood for a South Dakota Deck

Wood is still the right deck for some houses
A wood deck can be shaped around an older house, a curved stair, or a porch that was never square. It takes stain, it can be repaired board by board, and it matches timber posts and beams when that is the look of the house. In Sioux Falls that still matters on a lot of lots.
The tradeoff is upkeep. South Dakota sun fades a stain, and the wet spring swells boards that were tight in October. A wood deck is not a one-time finish. It needs a wash and a new coat on a schedule, or it goes gray and rough.
Composite changes the upkeep, not the structure
Composite boards shrug off stain schedules. They stay flatter, they do not splinter the same way, and they make sense when nobody in the house wants a weekend on a brush every few years. They also cost more up front, and a cheap board still fades or stains if it is the wrong product for a sunny, west-facing yard.
What composite does not fix is a weak frame. The joists, posts, and ledger still carry the snow and the people. Putting new composite on a tired frame just hides the problem under a more expensive surface.
How we help you choose
We ask how the deck is used, which side of the house it faces, and whether you would rather maintain wood or pay more now for a surface that needs less of it. Then we price both on the same frame plan so the comparison is honest.
If you want that conversation for a deck in Sioux Falls, Tea, or a nearby town, ask for a quote and tell us which way you are leaning. We will say if the site argues for the other one.
